When Rodney Barreto, the head of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission prioritized his personal interest over protecting the environment by seeking to fill and develop submerged seagrass beds in the Lake Worth Lagoon, ELC pushed back hard. We moved to intervene in his legal action seeking permission to fill and asked the Judge to dismiss it, unleashing a torrent of negative media attention in the process. Barreto eventually dismissed the suit and Palm Beach County has sought to purchase the property for environmental preservation, but as a government entity, they are limited to paying no more than the appraised value, and have not been able to convince Barreto to sell for anything close to that price.
