As the dust settles after an extremely polarizing election, we want you to know that we at the Everglades Law Center are ready to stand firm and fight back when it comes to protecting the Everglades.
Fighting back is a big part of what we do, and we do it well. For over 20 years, we have represented Floridians in challenges to local, state, and federal agencies over issues of land use, wetlands protection, and endangered species in and around America’s Everglades.
We have won some of the largest and most precedent-setting cases in the state—from preventing a massive development from being built in an area long slated for Everglades restoration, to stopping nearly 20,000 acres of mining from expanding south of Lake Okeechobee. Most recently, we are entering the seventh year of a legal challenge against one of the world’s largest utility companies and its quest to expand a nuclear power plant between two national parks, in an area that may be underwater by the end of this century if the effects of climate change go unaddressed.
When agencies in this state recently sought to silence Floridians demanding government transparency, Everglades Law Center attorneys pushed back effectively. We aren’t cowed by threats; we will continue fighting for fair and open dialogue and decision-making. And we recognize that the threats—both to open decision-making and to Florida’s most endangered ecosystems—are likely to increase in coming years. In challenging times, our environmental laws provide the best protection for Florida’s natural heritage, and the lawyers of the Everglades Law Center will continue to make sure these protections are enforced.
Critical decisions stand before us about whether Florida’s imperiled lakes, rivers, and streams will be protected and restored. This year, the urgent need to expedite restoration and send water south became apparent to all, as toxic algae blanketed the state yet again.
The momentum toward restoring America’s Everglades is at risk, as are the protections now in place for Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. These risks create an uncertain future for everyone and everything connected to the Everglades ecosystem, including the over seven million Floridians who rely on the Everglades to provide them with clean water.
As we have for the last twenty years, we will remain standing with Floridians protecting their homes, their environment, and their natural heritage. In short, we promise you that we will continue to protect south Florida’s precious and imperiled ecosystems using every tool at our disposal, including the courts. It’s that simple; the Everglades are worth saving.
